DUKES MAI TAI

MAI TAI

I’m convinced I had a Mai Tai at every establishment on the island of Oahu… ok, maybe I’m exaggerating, but I did sample quite a few.  Arriving home to New York during a bleak February morning after 10 days in Hawaii, I was determined to recreate said cocktail to brighten my days to come but couldn’t find a decent recipe online.  What’s a girl to do? Buy rum, fruit juice and fruit and nestle in to a comfy Saturday mixing and sipping a bunch of combinations until, VOILA, there it is, the perfect proportion of ingredients and a heavy buzzzz…..

Hulie’s Mai Tai Recipe

1 serving

1 oz dark rum

1 oz golden rum

1 oz OJ

2 oz pineapple juice

½ oz Cointreau

1 Tbsp fresh Lime juice

1 very tiny drop almond extract (yes, like you use in baking)

Dash of grenadine or the juice from the maraschino cherry jar (try Cherry Man brand, it has no artificial anything in it).

Garnish with maraschino cherry, slice of pineapple, slice of orange all stacked on a cocktail umbrella

Add ingredients to shaker with ice, shake and pour into rocks glass with ice, garnish, slurp.

IF you have a proper mai tai vessel, such as a glass with an angry looking Hawaiian God on the front, I am jealous and would suggest you use that instead.
